This Spring, the Chippewa Valley Eagles sponsored two plots at the St. Joseph's Community Garden for the first time. The Garden is located just off Scheidler Road just across from the Chippewa Valley Technical College. These plots, 12 x 24, allow families whose budgets do not allow for fresh produce or who struggle to put food on the table, to grow their own food for a small fee. Service Organizations are welcome to rent plots and donate 100 % of the produce raised. As this was our first year, we have learned a few lessons on how to be able to manage the weeds and have a larger harvest for next year. However, the harvest was very good for our first year. Throughout the year, we posted all of the harvest of beans, peas, corn, cucumbers and squash taken from the two plots we rented. Along with the other growers, the bounty of the garden was sent to various Food Pantries in the Chippewa Valley: Jim Falls Food Pantry, Presbyterian Food Pantry, Salvation Army just to name a few. These plots are behind a locked fenced ( to keep the critters out), fertilized, tilled, irrigated and have several bee hives for pollination. We are happy to say, that our plots donated over 300 pounds of produce. To date, the entire Garden has donated over 2,700 pounds of produce and still going ! This is a new record for the Garden and is very encouraging and exciting for the Pantries and families that benefit from these efforts. We hope to continue this new tradition for years to come.
